ROSE THAT GREW FROM CONCRETE

"Concrete jungle where dreams are made of..."

Yeah, I know, San Francisco is not New York. However, just like New York, San Francisco has gone through years and years of strict urbanization. This urbanization has given it the title of one of the most modern, urban cities in the world. Tall buildings, sidewalks, graffiti, make up this city. San Francisco is my concrete jungle that I continue to be amazed of.

You may be wondering what is up with this poetic title. "The Rose That Grew From Concrete" is a song by the legendary, Tupac. Why is this related you may ask? Because there are roses all around this concrete jungle ;-)

After walking around Downtown San Francisco with my great friends Christian and Gerardo, we were able to find various public rooftop gardens. These gardens are secret parks spread throughout the Financial District. Due to city law, privately owned buildings are required to provide public property free for hoodlums like me to come explore, haha! These POPOS (Publicly Open Privately Owned Spaces) range from simple concrete courtyards to extravagant garden terraces. After blindly walking around trying to figure out what to do, we found several buildings with bright signs with the letters "POPOS"!!!

Christian being an up and coming urban photographer loved this opportunity. Here are some of the pictures from Gerardo and I's little photoshoot. Locations include the Garden Terrace at the Crocker Galleria, Sky Terrace at the Westfield Shopping Center, and the Sutter Tunnel.

It was a day filled of laughter, catching up, and urban exploring.

10/10 recommend y'all to walk around Downtown and find some more POPOs!

Sincerely,

Kaithleen
